Nobody plays the fiddle like Danny Levin; and there are a few reasons for that. Danny tries to make everything look as hard as he can. He grimaces a lot and goes cross-eyed, especially when he tries to play breakdowns. As a kid he was trained as a classical cellist, but when he heard Texas swing and soon after met and recorded with Johnny Gimble, the cello got put up. Danny was Asleep at the Wheel’s first fiddler, toured and recorded with the Wheel for most of the 70’s. Won 2 Grammies and also played piano with them.
Danny is an accomplished jazz guy now, but he still loves the western stuff, gigging around Austin with Redd Volkaert, Cindy Cashdollar, and Rick Mcrae (of the Ace in the Hole band). He’s been on the faculty at the JG Swing Fiddle camp for the last 5 years, and co-produced the ’06 record “Case of the Gimbles.”
Danny’s straight job is running an ad music studio in Austin called Tequila Mockingbird.
